2006-2007 Season

Our Spring concert 2007 took place on Saturday 17th March at St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham.

This was a mixed choral and instrumental concert starting in the first half with Humperdick’s Hansel and Gretel Overture and followed by another instrumental piece, the very nationalistic Vltava by the Czech composer Smetana. These are quite well-known works and were well-received by the audience with the orchestra English Pro Musica (Leader Claire Stanley) under the baton of Simon Bell obviously on good form.

To conclude the first half the choir and orchestra with Baritone soloist Julian Empett performed Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. These were completed by the composer in 1911 and performed at the Three Choirs Festival in that year. They are settings of religious poems by the 17th century poet George Herbert. This was the first time they had been performed by the Society.

The main work occupying the whole of the second half of the concert was a performance of the Messa di Gloria by Puccini. This was written when Puccini was only 22 years old but although ostensibly a religious work it is totally operatic in character and abounds with wonderful themes that Puccini was to become so famous for.

This was a highly successful concert and was an exciting ending to our first season under the expert guidance of Simon Bell.
